ESA Request for Accommodation Sample Letter

[Date]                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Dear [name of landlord]:

My name is [insert name] and I am a tenant at [insert address and apartment number if applicable]. I have a diagnosed [emotional/mental/psychological] disability hampering my capability to live alone. I acknowledge your building has a strict ‘no pets policy’ which I respect, however, my physician has recommended me to acquire an emotional support animal [in lieu of/in addition to] medication. I am therefore requesting a reasonable accommodation under the Federal Fair Housing Amendments Act (42 U.S.C. 3601, et seq).

Proper verification of my disability from a licensed professional is included with this letter.

A reply to this request would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. I look forward to your response.

  1. I have used a Psychiatric Service Dog since 2002. A PSD is different from an ESA, in that a PSD is individually trained to do specific tasks that mitigate your condition, and they are allowed virtually anywhere. I think it’s wonderful that it’s now federally mandated that people who need ESAs can have them. There is nothing more comforting than “critter comfort”!

    • Laura – absolutely! I’m happy to hear you’ve had such success with a PSD animal. Admittedly, I wasn’t aware of the difference between PSD and ESA animals so thank you for that information! I personally have two lil ones that are certified ESAs. They bring such a level of unconditional love and support that have resulted in less medication and higher confidence for me.

If you’re comfortable in doing so, send me an e-mail at I’d love to be able to share your experience with others on this site and raise awareness about this wonderful alternative/supplement to mental and social health (and if you do, be sure to include a picture of your lil ones!) Not many people know this is a viable option.

Thank you for visiting and commenting 🙂

  2. this is kinda off topic… but I’d figured I’d ask anyway. Would you be interested in exchanging links or maybe guest authoring a blog article or vice-versa?

My blog goes over a lot of the same topics as yours and I think we could greatly benefit from each
other. If you’re interested feel free to shoot me an e-mail.
I look forward to hearing from you! Wonderful blog by the way!
